MICA Catalog

Strategy, Design

The Maryland Institute, College of Art (MICA) is the oldest independent, degree-granting, fully-accredited art college in the nation. I have a long standing relationship working with MICA on a wide variety of marketing and multimedia projects for the school including undergraduate and graduate catalogs, recruitment “search campaigns”, websites, posters, and CDs. Each project must appeal and communicate effectively to a variety of different audiences simultaneously including parents, educators, and high school students.

While working at Franek Design Inc, I had the opportunity to design one of the first digitally produced print media catalogs for an art school. The catalog showcased MICA’s best features as well as its curriculum, faculty, and admissions information. A rich vibrant color palette was used to represent the diversity of attitudes and offerings within the school, as well as the uniqueness of the campus. Multiple typefaces were incorporated throughout the catalog, mixing cool and unconventional fonts with more traditional fonts, to create a “funky yet sophisticated” attitude.

This work was featured in several publications and given 6 different award including the Mead Top 60, Art Directors Club of Metropolitan DC and Print Casebooks.
